Book and Paper Treatments

I provide a variety of treatments for books and paper that place priority on the immediate structural needs of the object. I also take into account your needs and goals for the usage of your item. All treatments include examination and photodocumentation of your object before and after treatment. All documentation and treatments are in accordance with the AIC Code of Ethics.

How to get your object treated by me:

  • Contact me via email or phone

  • Initial examination of the book can be done either via email or in person at my studio. This allows me to get a better idea of the needs your object has for treatment. If you send photos via email please include a reference so I can gage the size of your object. I will be open and honest with you about all treatment possibilities. In some cases, no treatment is the best course of action. Based on this initial assessment of your item, I will provide you with a price range for the cost of treatment. I will never charge you more than the range, but if the treatment takes less time than expected I will lower the final cost for you.

  • To proceed with treatment, I will provide you with a treatment contract to sign. View contract here.

  • You can mail the book to me or drop it off at my studio in Stillwater. If you are in the Twin Cities metro area I can pick up your item for an additional delivery fee.

  • A thorough examination is carried out to record the condition of your object before treatment. I will also take before treatment photographs to accompany the examination report.

  • I will write a treatment plan based on our discussions for the needs of your object. I will have you sign off on the plan before I begin any procedure.

  • Treatment is performed. I will inform you any unexpected discoveries or needs for deviation from the plan. This can be quite common especially during book treatment because so much of the physical structure is hidden under the covers.

  • Once treatment is completed, I will complete a treatment form that summarizes the specific steps taken during treatment and the time it took to perform. After treatment photos are taken to document the result of treatment.

  • I will notify you as soon as treatment is completed. I can either ship your item back to you or you can pick it up from me at the studio. Payment will be due upon completion and receipt of your item.

  • All reports and photographs of your object will be made available to you.
